![]() Unfortunately, both Zero Hour and The Whisper were casualties of Destiny 2’s sunsetting in fall 2020. When one of my old friends returned to Destiny 2, taking them through The Whisper and Zero Hour was my top priority. The missions also offered unique experiences to Destiny 2, melding speedrunning with heavy platforming. Outbreak Perfected and Whisper of the Worm changed the game’s weapon meta for months - Guardians used them in raids, Nightfalls, and everything in between. The secret was a big part of the excitement, but it was also about the quality of the reward. I remember pushing back dinner plans so I could get through The Whisper with some friends, or getting inundated with messages telling me “something is happening,” when Bungie launched Zero Hour. When Bungie launched each new mission, it was a massive surprise for everyone. Zero Hour let Guardians adventure through the ruins of the Tower from the original Destiny, and rewarded them with Outbreak Perfected, another incredibly powerful Exotic weapon. This time players had a whole questline to do before unlocking the secret mission. After a few runs of hunting and exploring, players started beating The Whisper and earned themselves the Whisper of the Worm Exotic sniper rifle, which remained the best Exotic in Destiny 2 until Bungie nerfed it in June of 2019.Ī little less than a year after The Whisper mission - during Destiny 2’s dreadful Gambit-focused Season of the Drifter - Bungie created an even better secret with the Zero Hour mission. And to add some pep to the Guardians’ steps, the mission featured a 20 minute timer. The Whisper took players deep inside of Io, through several tricky jumping puzzles, and some serious combat. Fireteams didn’t know what the mission was or what they’d get out of it, but the community raced to log on and find out. It took hours for players to discover, and the news spread like wildfire across Reddit and Twitter. But on July 20, 2018, players found a portal to a new mission. The summer before Forsaken, the frustrations of a year of sub-par Destiny 2 were really starting to grind on the community. The secret Whisper mission appeared right when Destiny 2 needed it most. ![]() Jumping along the old tower in Zero Hour Image: Bungie via Polygon Read my new sci-fi thriller novel Herokiller, available now in print and online. Enjoy the insanity while it lasts.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. And this is why I think Outbreak is headed for at least some kind of nerf in the near future. That’s a case where an overly strong weapon actually makes the game less fun because it feels mandatory in almost all situations. ![]() But longer term, no, I don’t think the optimal strategy for every boss in the game should be everyone on your team using the same exotic pulse rifle. Personally, I don’t really care about this right now because I’m enjoying using the stupidly strong weapon as-is and watching all these fun boss burn videos. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that this is how the gun was meant to work, and the current issue was unintended, but only Bungie knows for sure.Īnd the current issues are before we even get the catalyst, which increases nanite damage on top of the insane damage the gun is already doing. The reduction or removal of team stacking nanites, as in, either the multiplier you get from your team’s nanites goes down, which would really only affect bosses, or the concept of stacking is removed entirely, meaning you are only granted increased damage based on your own nanites. So, what can be done? Two possible nerfs could be implemented that would leave the Outbreak strong in PvE and PvP, yet make it so that a primary pulse rifle wasn’t the best boss burning tool in your arsenal:Ī flat damage reduction against bosses, which is a bit of a blunt force solution.
